Whether you know your wardrobe inside out or can't see the bottom of your closet, it's always a good idea to organize. A simple strategy for piecing together an outfit for any occasion is to plan your wardrobe around neutral colors, such as black, white, khaki, navy or brown. Also, be sure to have more solids than prints; you won't get tired of them as quickly. If you follow these "basic" tips, looking great will be a breeze!

Stock Up On "The Basics"

The Black Suit: The classic black suit is a versatile wardrobe staple. Black clothes look sophisticated, are flattering to all figure types and lend a polished, professional look. You can also mix & match different seasonal accessories with a black suit throughout the year for any occasion.

Wearable Whites: White is a great foundation for layering and can be paired with almost anything. Stock up on white tee shirts, camisoles and/or tank tops to compliment any fabric, and your outfits will build themselves.

The Natural Neutrals: Colors such as black, white, khaki, navy, brown and gray are easy to match and provide the wearer with many options. Base your wardrobe around these colors and you'll always have shoes and accessories that coordinate.

Put Some Color in Your Life: While neutrals are your fashion "safety net," colors really brighten up your day. To make the most of bright shades, pick two or three colors that complement your hair and skin tone and stick to them. That allows you to plan more than one outfit around any one piece and also offers more options when accessorizing.

Mix and Match: Now that you have the foundation for a great wardrobe, don't be afraid to combine pieces from different sections of your closet. Pair a dressy top with jeans for a casual cocktail party or use your black suit jacket to lend an air of confidence to any outfit.

Use the Appropriate Hangers: Padded, shaped suit-hangers work well for sheer fabric blouses, dresses, suits and tailored garments. Plastic tubular hangers are appropriate for tightly woven, lightweight shirts and blouses. Use garment fasteners and support straps or loops at the neckline of a dress or blouse to keep it well positioned and minimize garment distortion. Hang pants or slacks from the cuff or hem to prevent creases. If you chose to hang your trousers, use pant hangers or conventional plastic hangers with a large, rounded bar to avoid a fold at the thigh.

Fold knitted garments: Hanging knitted garments, such as sweaters, distorts their shape. Instead, fold these items neatly and place acid-free tissue paper between each sweater. Fold as little as necessary and keep the folds on the seams. Stack clothing with the heaviest items on the bottom. Painted closet shelves or drawer liners help prevent garment snags and protect clothing from the natural oils of unfinished wood.

Let your garments breathe: Whether you choose to hang or fold your clothes, it is important that your fabrics breathe! Never store your clothes in plastic, which prevents air circulation. Lack of air circulation can allow moisture to collect and mildew to form. Some plastics also cause light colored fabrics to yellow over time.

Take Out the Trash: Periodically replace your wardrobe essentials and you'll always have a polished look. If you just can't part with an item that has lost its sheen, move it to the "casual" side of your closet. Updating: Shop for new items in small doses. Limit yourself to a few well-planned pieces each month. You'll always look fresh, without spending too much money.
