Now that the weather has turned warm, comforters and quilts are a thing of the past. Before you pack them away until next year, make sure you clean them properly to ensure warm winters for years to come.
Cleaning:
 Follow the directions on the cleaning label. Do not machine wash an item that says “dry clean only.” Instead, bring it to one of our 17 locations for proper cleaning and care.
Commercial washers are best for large items, like comforters and bedspreads. A “triple loader,” which holds a 35-pound capacity or higher, results in better aeration after the rinse cycle. This also helps to remove dust mites more effectively. If you drop your comforter/bedspread off at Dependable Cleaners, it will be cleaned using a commercial machine for optimum results.
Handmade quilts usually hold special sentimental value, especially when they are precious heirlooms that have been handed down through the generations. Dry cleaning these treasured items is the most effective way to keep them looking their best. Should you choose to hand wash your item, fill a large bathtub and add a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Gently work the detergent into the fabric, using slow, kneading motions. Be careful of stitching and any special fringe that may tear easily. Never use a brush or abrasive scrubbing materials, which could damage your fabric. To rinse, drain the tub and refill it with fresh water. Slowly work the detergent out of material, then gently roll it to remove all excess water. Hang out to dry away from direct sunlight. Remember to keep it properly supported.
Wash all colored fabrics in a mild detergent. Whites can be cleaned in hot water using a mild bleach, but avoid using one with chlorine, which leaves a residue that is hard to remove and can cause discoloration over time.
Drying:
Commercial dryers are best for large items, like comforters and bedspreads because, like washing, they result in better aeration. If you bring your comforter/bedspread to one of our 17 locations, it will be cleaned using a commercial dryer for optimum results.
Be aware of chintz glazes and other special finishes that give off a glossy appearance. These special additives may look great, however can wear over time causing a chalky dulled appearance. This also adds an increased vulnerability to pilling and tearing. (NaturalCleaners.com)
Drying comforters and bedspreads for long periods of time can also cause them to pill. For best results, dry them on high for 20 minutes, then reverse them and dry for another 20 minutes. Finish the job by drying the item for another 20-40 minutes on a warm setting.
Many wool blankets can be dried on a high setting. Add some towels to help absorb moisture and cut down on drying time.
Storage:
A simple way to store freshly laundered blankets is to fold and slide them into king-size pillowcases. This prevents dust from settling on the blankets while allowing them to “breathe.”

Dustmites:
Dust mites are the #1 cause of allergies! Just one gram of dust (about half a teaspoon) contains approximately 1,000 dust mites! In a recent study, dry cleaning was shown to be 98% effective in killing dust mites. This is partly due to the cleaning process; larger washing machines with larger drums allow for more effective aeration of items like bedspreads and blankets.
