As the winter weather “lion” makes way for a sunny spring “lamb” you’ll need to store your warmer wools in favor of cooler cottons. Here are some helpful tips for effectively storing your bulky winter wardrobe to make way for silky spring and summer attire:

Clean garments before storing: Many stains that are invisible to the naked eye are just as harmful as those you can see. If left untreated, these stains can ruin your clothing. These “leftovers” can also invite moths and other insects to picnic on your garments. Dependable Cleaners can help you ensure that all garments are properly prepared for hibernation.

Clean clothes properly: Wash your clothes with the appropriate soaps. Avoid using additives such as starch or chlorine bleach. If a garment requires the use of a fabric softener, put it through a rinse or dry cycle with the softener when you unpack it next fall. If an item requires dry cleaning, be sure to visit one of our 17 "dependable" locations.

Use the appropriate hangers: Coats and heavy suits should be placed on strong, padded hangers. Use all extra hanging loops and fabric fasteners to ensure that your items don’t become misshapen or stretched. Hang pants or slacks from the cuff or hem. If you use conventional hangers, make sure they have a round cardboard bar to avoid a fold at the thigh.  Don't hang knitted garments (such as sweaters), as this may distort their shape.

Use the right containers: The best storage container is a clean, unused suitcase. Cardboard boxes are also great for “temporary” storage as long as they are clean and in good condition.  Staining and insect infestation can happen if the box is old and mottled. Be sure to neatly fold knitted garments and place acid-free tissue paper between each item. Stack clothing with the heaviest items on the bottom. Try not to crowd the items because they need space to breathe. For first-rate effects, line your case with acid-free tissue to prevent moisture build-up.

Use the Appropriate Hangers: Padded, shaped suit-hangers work well for sheer fabric blouses, dresses, suits and tailored garments. Plastic tubular hangers are appropriate for tightly woven, lightweight shirts and blouses. Use garment fasteners and support straps or loops at the neckline of a dress or blouse to keep it well positioned and minimize garment distortion. Hang pants or slacks from the cuff or hem to prevent creases. If you chose to hang your trousers, use pant hangers or conventional plastic hangers with a large, rounded bar to avoid a fold at the thigh.

Avoid using plastic bags: Plastic can cause discoloration and decrease airflow. Clothing should instead be wrapped in pillowcases, a clean white sheet or acid-free tissue. Don’t cramp your closet by shoving all your winter wear together in a small area. This can cause mildew and wrinkles. Instead, keep one to two inches between each hanger. If you don’t have enough space to store your garments properly, feel free to bring them to one of our 17 locations and we’ll gladly store them for you.

Keep your garments away from heat and humidity and moths: Closets are the perfect place to store your clothes. They are cool, dark, clean and dry, and sunlight cannot penetrate. Moisture can cause mildew, while heat and sun exposure can cause your garments to fade over time. Try to avoid storing your clothes where they can come in contact with furnace fumes, since they can affect the dyes in clothing and cause discoloration. Finally, make sure your closet or storage area is clean and dust-free before storing your clothing.

Be selective about air fresheners: Mothballs can be harmful to children if eaten and their smell can adhere to fur, creating unpleasant odors that are difficult to remove. Try using more natural substitutes, such as cedar blocks or wrapped potpourri, to keep clothes smelling fresh.
We have temperature- and humidity-controlled vaults for proper seasonal storage. For more information about storing your clothes at Dependable Cleaners, please visit the store nearest you or call 617-471-1900.
